Travel Review: A Guernsey Getaway

Guernsey offers the perfect mix of picturesque wedding venues and spectacular seaside scenery. Charlotte Saunders takes a tour of the island to share all...

Each of the five islands of Guernsey offers a unique wedding experience that is close to home. The charming islands include Sark, Herm, Alderney, Lihou and the largest island, Guernsey. Ideal for that destination wedding you're looking for without the long flights and language barrier. Flights from England to Guernsey are as little as 40 minutes, however, you also have the option to travel by ferry, taking around 3 hours. The ferry is the perfect option if you want to explore the island in the comfort of your own vehicle.

A Change In Laws

Recent changes in the law now allow anyone to get married anywhere on the island, whether that be a beach, castle or boat. This new law also allows non-residents to exchange vows on the island of Guernsey, whether that is a religious or civil ceremony. If you would like a religious ceremony you will need to contact the relevant religious official, or a civil ceremony can be administered by a Deputy Registrar or Authorised Civil Celebrant, who operate in a private capacity. Just make sure you give notice through the Royal Court up to 12 months before the date.

Whether you are looking to plan a big wedding or a more intimate ceremony, Guernsey caters for all. With a variety of unique venues and the help of celebrants and planners, your big day can be organised with no hassle, even if you live across the seas. Anett from The Wedding Company spoke to me about what she offers for couples who don’t live on the island. She specialises in providing a bespoke high-end wedding planning service while focusing on making sure each wedding is planned in alignment with each couple’s lifestyle. She offers a unique experience allowing each couple to relax and enjoy their wedding journey wherever they live. theweddingcompany.gg

Venue Galore

The scenic views, clear sea and rural lane make the idyllic island of Guernsey the perfect destination wedding and honeymoon location for those wanting to stay close to home. Guernsey is geographically closer to France and has an air of the classy continent about it. With wonderful beaches, 28 miles of coast and dramatic cliff paths, it is becoming an increasingly popular destination.

I was fortunate enough to be staying on the island's north west coast overlooking the Grand Harve Bay. The Peninsula Hotel sits within 5 acres of land, creating a peaceful experience and the simply breathtaking seaside view from my bedroom window was the cherry on top. The Peninsula offers 99 rooms, juxtaposing modern décor with classic styling, as well as a beautiful bridal suite, making it the perfect option for a big wedding. Whether you want a wedding in the delightful gardens or in the banqueting suite, the Peninsula can cater to any style of wedding, giving each couple a more personalised experience. peninsula.gg

If you’re looking for a luxurious, grand venue, Old Government House Hotel may be the best choice for you. With the ability to cater for up to 250 people, it is the only 5* hotel on the island offering a variety of options for your big day. Each room in the hotel is individually designed with lavish fabrics and elegant touches, each with a different look to meet the varying needs of their customers. With stylish rooms, exceptional food and excellent service you will get the very best experience. theoghhotel.com

For those of you who have your heart set on a fairytale wedding, Guernsey has a variety of castles for you to live out your very own princess wedding dreams. With spectacular sea views and grand photo backdrops, I had the pleasure of visiting Castle Cornet, the ultimate location for your special day. The castle has guarded the harbour for 800 or so years. Steeped in history, you will see many cannons around the castle - the firing of the noon day gun is something you don’t want to miss! This iconic site can host ceremonies or receptions and there are a variety of smaller locations in and around the castle where your reception can be facilitated. No matter how big or small your reception, you will always be made to feel like royalty for your special day. museums.gov.gg/CastleCornet

If you would prefer a more tropical, peaceful island wedding then Herm island is the one for you, with no cars or crowds on the island and only a 20 minute boat ride from Guernsey, it’s the most captivating location. I visited the historic White House Hotel to find out more about their wedding packages. The White House Hotel with its own swimming pool and tennis court is the only hotel on the island. It has a harbour-side setting and spectacular sea views. With a country house feel to this hotel they pride themselves on enabling you to relax and unwind - which is why you will find no TV in the room. Without a doubt, getting married on Herm island will create a magical day for every couple. If you’re lucky you may even spot dolphins and puffins in the crystal-clear sea, making your experience even more magical and filled with memories to treasure! herm.com

We had the opportunity to be driven around the island with TukTuk Guernsey. The 3-wheel vehicle was adorned with a whimsical floral display from Simply Bespoke. TukTuks are a creative and fun way for a couple to arrive at the reception. They offer various tours so if you want to explore before your big day, this is a fabulous option to see some more of the island while you plan your big day! tuktukguernsey.co.uk

Some couples might opt for a coach to transport the guests from the Ceremony to reception. Intransit can provide a 33 or 35 seater coach, either modern or vintage for your big day. Travelling in the Twinkle bus is like stepping back in time - the 1954 vintage Albion Victor bus is an excellent option adding a vintage touch to your special day. intransit.gg/vintage-coach

In A Nutshell

Each of the five islands of Guernsey gives that destination feel without the need to travel far and each destination is guaranteed to impress your guests. It is easy to travel between each of the islands and is ideal for island-hopping. Known for scenic cliff paths, excellent restaurants and sandy beaches, Guernsey is the ideal setting for your romantic break to celebrate as a married couple and make special memories.
